We LOVED Guo Pei's exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery

As we stroll through the halls of art galleries, we often expect to encounter masterpieces adorning the walls, but what about masterpieces adorning our feet? Guo Pei's exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery offers a breathtaking fusion of fashion and art, where every garment tells a story and every accessory is a work of art. Among the stunning ensembles showcased, it's the shoes that I want to talk about, do they remind you of a certain legendary creation of Sarah's from a decade ago?

A decade may have passed since the creation of the world's most expensive diamond shoe, a collaboration between Sarah Hutchings and shoe designer Kathryn Wilson. Crafted for a noble cause—a Ronald McDonald House charity project—the diamond-studded Kathryn Wilson stiletto captured global attention as "the most expensive shoe ever made." With a staggering 21 carats of diamonds and a reserve price of $500,000, this dazzling creation made headlines around the world, gracing the pages of publications like the Daily Mail in the UK.

    Who remembers the diamond shoe?

Fast forward to the present, and Guo Pei's exhibition transports us into a realm where fashion transcends mere clothing to become a form of artistry. Her shoes, meticulously crafted with intricate details and opulent embellishments, serve as wearable sculptures, each pair telling its own narrative. As we admire these footwear wonders, it's impossible not to draw parallels to the diamond shoe that captivated hearts around the world a decade ago.

These creations share a common thread—they elevate footwear beyond its utilitarian purpose to become symbols of luxury, creativity, and craftsmanship. Just as Guo Pei's shoes invite us to step into a world of fantasy and extravagance, the diamond shoe of yesteryear embodied a similar ethos, albeit with a distinct sparkle.

What makes these shoes truly remarkable is their ability to transcend the boundaries between fashion and art. Like brushstrokes on a canvas or notes in a symphony, every bead, every stitch, and every diamond on these shoes contributes to a larger artistic vision. They remind us that art is not confined to galleries alone; it can be found in the most unexpected places, from the tip of a stiletto to the curve of a heel.

As we immerse ourselves in Guo Pei's exhibition, let us not only admire the beauty of her creations but also reflect on the enduring legacy of the diamond shoe—a testament to the boundless creativity and ingenuity of artists and designers alike. In a world where fashion is often dismissed as frivolous, these shoes remind us of its power to inspire, to provoke, and to elevate the human spirit.
